As the demand for recycled timber increases across commercial and residential projects within Australia, the need for an industry wide standard has never been more important.

The Interim Industry Standard for Recycled Timber offers manufacturers, suppliers and users specific Grading guidelines. Published by the Forest and Wood Products Australia, the primary objective of the guidelines is to provide the Australian recycled timber industry with a professional, consistent standard.

KENNEDY’S CLASSIC AGED TIMBERS COMES IN THE FOLLOWING STRUCTURAL GRADES:

CLASSIC AGED PREMIUM

This timber is the pinnacle of recycled timber. It will be graded to a minimum of F17 and contain a subtle blend of characteristics of its former use, such as nail, bolt holes surface ageing etc. All of which give warmth and appeal to the finished product. Large bolt holes and other evidence of former use can be either plugged or black resin filled. This is available in dressed, brushed, sawn, Smokey grey or sawtooth finish

Some typical examples of PREMIUM grade include:

Tight gum veins

Black resin filled bolt holes

Tight surface checking

CLASSIC AGED CHARACTER

This timber will be rich in character with a strong showing of the characteristics of its former use. These characteristics will be left “as is”. This is available in dressed, brushed, sawn, Smokey grey or sawtooth finish

Some typical examples of CHARACTER grade include;

Nail holes, some with tannin staining in nail holes

Open gum pockets

Surface checking

Open gum veins

CLASSIC AGED RUSTIC

This timber will be full of characteristics of its former use. Large bolt holes, surface checking, splits etc. will be evident in this timber. This is available in brushed, sawn, or “as is”.

Important things to consider when choosing a grade of recycled timber:

What is the end application?  What is the finish required?  What is the structural grading required?  What colour and or durability are required?  Are bolt holes to be plugged/black resin filled?  Is the timber to be used internally or externally?  Will the timber receive any coating either prior to or after installation?  Will your supplier provide a certificate of timber origin and grading compliance?
