Contributing to projects of significance is a responsibility Kennedy’s Timbers is humbled by.

The recent refurbishment of the Wolston Cricket Club Pavilion is yet another shining example of such a project.

Listed on Queensland State Heritage Register, National Estate Register and National Trust of Queensland, this historic building has been fully restored, recreating its time and place in history.

Built in 1910, the pavilion is located on the grounds of the former Wolston Park Hospital complex; the earliest institution in Queensland for the treatment of mentally ill patients.

A key aspect of the institution’s philosophy was the establishment of a safe and pleasant environment in which patients could be encouraged to undertake social activities, including sport.

A celebrated national pastime, cricket provided a public face to the institution and a means by which to promote health among patients.

In recent years, the hospital site (including the pavilion) was acquired by the Queensland Police Service to house its new Police Academy.

Recognised with a 2011 Silver Heritage Council Award for Excellence, this remarkable restoration was a result of the efforts of QBuild.

Minister for Government Services and the Building Industry, Simon Finn said the QBuild team won the award for their consistent commitment and attention to detail.

“QBuild tradies and apprentices delivered this work by using traditional methods, which meant no air powered tools on site, just good old fashioned hand tools and trade skills,” Mr Finn said.

“The attention to detail in the restoration work is impressive, from the profile matching and date stamping of timber, to the recreation of turned verandah posts and sourcing of period door and window fixtures.”

“The restoration project not only provided a fascinating insight into the history of the site, but has ensured the historic integrity of the pavilion is maintained for many generations to come,” said Mr Finn.

Featuring Kennedy’s premium recycled Red Ironbark timber, the end product is one to be admired and sure to last for the next 100 years.

www.qbuild.com.au

Award – QBuild won a 2011 National Trust Heritage Award

Every industry requires a standard.

As the demand for recycled timber increases across commercial and residential projects within Australia, the need for an industry wide standard has never been more important.

The Interim Industry Standard for Recycled Timber offers manufacturers, suppliers and users specific grading guidelines.

Published by the Forest and Wood Products Australia, the primary objective of the guidelines is to provide the Australian recycled timber industry with a professional, consistent standard.

The two guidelines outline the requirements for visually grading recycled hardwood timber intended for Structural Use and Decorative Applications.

Kennedy’s is proud to have played a role in initiating, drafting and producing these practical documents.

The guidelines are the perfect tool for every architect, designer and builder.

Kennedy’s encourages all within the industry to utilise the interim standard, ensuring a benchmark for quality for all recycled timber consumers.

With timber at the very heart of its blueprint, Kennedy’s premium RFG1 grade recycled Grey Ironbark offers an exceptional finish to this sacred space.

Applied to the internal screening, exterior seating and wall cladding, the timber’s warm colour palette provides an ideal contrast to the surrounding structure.

The conceptual idea was that of a simple timber box within a concrete frame. The result; an award winning structure, rich in fine detail, honouring its environment.

A recent survey conducted by campaign partner Forest and Wood Products Australia (FWPA) showed that although 93 per cent of people understood that trees absorb carbon, only 39 per cent realised that when the tree is responsibly harvested, and used to make wood products, the carbon remains locked in the wood for the life of the product.

As well as storing carbon, there are other environmental benefits to using wood. In most cases, the production and processing of wood uses significantly less energy than other major building materials such as concrete, steel or plastics, giving wood products a lower carbon footprint than its alternatives.

Kennedy’s certified premium recycled timber ticks all the right boxes

“In addition to helping tackle climate change, responsibly sourced wood is also renewable, durable, versatile and a cost effective building material,” said Rebecca Gilling, Planet Ark spokesperson and former host of lifestyle and renovations program Our House.

As the carbon benefits of wood products are based upon the trees being responsibly harvested, Planet Ark’s Make It Wood campaign encourages consumers to source wood that is independently certified to ensure high conservation value forests are protected.

Recognised as a leading supplier and advocate for sustainable building products, Kennedy’s is proud to support the Make It Wood campaign.

Situated overlooking the Hawkesbury River Escarpment House is an inspiring Architectural achievement.

An innovative design, the distinctive structure was recognised in four categories at the 2011 Australian Timber Design Awards, including the coveted Recycled Timber Award.

This masterpiece, crafted by Timothy Moon Architects, showcases a wide range of Kennedy’s recycled timbers including Ironbark (structural posts and beams), Spotted Gum (roof lining) and Blackbutt (flooring and joinery).

The house is comprised of a series of linked timber and stone pavilions, located on the edge of a natural escarpment.

Each pavilion offers an outstanding view whilst interacting with its natural surrounding landscape.

A timber walkway leads over the escarpment along the tree tops to a separate room, which provides breathtaking views over the property and river beyond.

With much of the timber supplied salvaged from the Mackay Sugar Warehouse, this contemporary abode enjoys a unique history embedded in its design.

Located in a natural setting, laden with Kennedy’s recycled timber to complement its environment, Escarpment House provides a retreat rich in detail and character.
